Chora

Skala

The harbour where every boat comes in

The island's port and its liveliest village, on a deep bay at the narrow waist of Patmos. Yachts tie up along the seafront, cafés stay open until the last ferry, and the road climbs from here to Chora and the monastery. It is the easiest base if you want to walk to dinner and take boats to the beaches.

  • Seafront cafés at ferry time
  • Boats to Psili Ammos and Lipsi
  • The road up to the Cave of the Apocalypse

Grikos

A calm, shallow bay with a rock in the sea

  • Calm, shallow water
  • Fish tavernas on the sand

Lampi

A beach of coloured pebbles at the end of the road

A long bay at the far north of the island, covered in smooth pebbles of red, green, purple and white volcanic stone. There is one taverna on the shore, and nothing else, so come for a long swim and a late lunch. Please leave the stones where they are.

  • Volcanic pebbles in every colour
  • One taverna on the beach
  • Clear, deep water

Meloi

A tree-shaded bay a short walk from Skala

A sheltered bay just north of Skala, with tamarisks down to the water, a campsite under the trees and a couple of tavernas. It is close enough to walk from the port, and quiet enough to feel far from it.

  • Shade under tamarisks
  • A 20-minute walk from Skala
  • Simple tavernas by the water
