A ferry in the port of Adamas

Milos · Getting there

How to get to Milos

Milos is in the south-west of the Cyclades, and there are two ways in. Small planes fly from Athens to the island's airport in well under an hour, and ferries from Piraeus come into the deep, sheltered bay of Adamas, the port, at the end of the line through the western Cyclades. That line makes Milos easy to pair with Sifnos or Serifos, and the little island of Kimolos is only a short hop away from Pollonia.

By plane

2 airports to choose from

The island's own airport only takes small planes from Athens, so most visitors from abroad fly to Athens first. Seats are few in summer: book early, or take the boat.

MLO

Milos National Airport

Near Zefyria, about 5 km south-east of Adamas

Short domestic flights from Athens only, with Olympic Air and Sky Express, around 40 minutes. Several a day in summer, fewer in winter.

Into town: Taxis and hire cars wait for the flights; Adamas is about 10 minutes away, Pollonia and Plaka about 15–20.

ATH

Athens “Eleftherios Venizelos”

Spata, east of Athens

Flights from all over Europe and beyond, all year. The usual way in.

Into town: Change to a domestic flight to Milos, or take the metro, a bus or a taxi to Piraeus, about an hour, for the ferry to Adamas.

When you land

Good to know on arrival

  • Adamas is the hub

The ferries, buses, taxis, car hire offices and boat-trip kiosks are all on the waterfront at Adamas. Plaka, Pollonia and the south coast are all within about 20 minutes' drive.

  • Hire something with wheels

Buses link Adamas with Plaka, Pollonia and the main beaches in summer, but a small car, a scooter or a quad lets you reach the coves. Many beach roads are dirt tracks, so check what your hire contract covers. In July and August, book before you arrive.

  • See the west by boat

The wild west of the island, Kleftiko and most of the sea caves have no road. Book a boat trip from Adamas for a day when the wind is light, and keep a spare day in case it is cancelled.

  • The meltemi blows in summer

The north wind can be strong in July and August. It makes the north-coast beaches rough and the fast boats bumpy, so swim in the south on windy days and leave a spare day before a flight home.

Times and frequencies are typical for the summer season and change every year. Check the current timetable before you book.
