A ferry at the port of Kamares

Sifnos · Getting there

How to get to Sifnos

Sifnos has no airport, so everyone arrives the same way: by sea, into the deep bay of Kamares on the west coast. The boats come from Piraeus and stop on the line through the western Cyclades, so Sifnos is easy to pair with Serifos or Milos. From the port, the road climbs about 6 km to Apollonia, and the rest of the island is never far.

By plane

No airport, so the last leg is by boat

Most people fly to Athens and take the ferry from Piraeus. You can also fly to a nearby island with an airport and cross by boat. Check that the boat times match your flight before you book.

ATH

Athens “Eleftherios Venizelos”

Spata, east of Athens

Flights from all over Europe and beyond, all year. The usual way in.

Into town: Take the metro, a bus or a taxi to the port of Piraeus, about an hour, then the ferry to Kamares. With an early flight you can be on Sifnos the same day.

MLO

Milos

Near Adamas, Milos

A small airport with short domestic flights from Athens only. Seats are few, so book early.

Into town: Take a taxi to the port of Adamas, then a ferry or fast boat to Kamares, about 1–2 hours.

JTR

Santorini

Kamari, Santorini

Direct flights from much of Europe in summer, and from Athens all year.

Into town: Take a taxi or bus to the port of Athinios, then a boat to Kamares. It is a longer crossing with stops on the way, so check the timetable for the day.

When you land

Good to know on arrival

  • Everything starts at Kamares

The boats, the taxis, the buses and the car hire offices are all on the waterfront at Kamares. From there it is a short drive up to Apollonia, the hub of the island.

  • The bus is good, a car is better

Buses run from Kamares to Apollonia, and from Apollonia on to Kastro, Platis Gialos, Vathi, Faros and Cherronisos. A small car or scooter lets you reach the quieter coves and the monasteries. In July and August, book one before you arrive.

  • Book the taxi ahead

Sifnos has only a few taxis, and they all meet the same ferries. Ask your hotel to arrange one, or book it before you land.

  • The meltemi blows in summer

The north wind can be strong in July and August. It can make the fast boats bumpy, so take the big ferry if you get seasick, and leave a spare day before a flight home.

Times and frequencies are typical for the summer season and change every year. Check the current timetable before you book.
